A Day at Acton
Our learners participate in daily peer-led socratic discussions, hands-on projects, and build core skills through individually paced platforms.
Mornings are reserved for Core skills and afternoons are for hands-on projects with integrated time to reflect, think deeply, and connect with peers. Learners manage their time, set goals, and track progress, and earn more freedom and responsibility along the way.
Morning Session (8:00 – 11:30)
We launch each day with a Socratic discussion to highlight the focus of the day and build energy, bring up a community need, or just inspire and encourage learners. These discussions are often led by our Eagles and operate according to our community rules. They teach analytical, social and critical-thinking skills in a safe, open environment. The morning launch is followed by independent and small-group work on core skills (reading, writing, and math) using state-of-the-art learning software and hands-on materials. Work is self-directed, aimed at mastery and tracked for guide and parental review. The learners then engage in art or movement. Other morning activities include team-building exercises, classroom clean up and organization, and a group discussion to reflect on morning work.
Lunch (11:30-12:00)
Eagles bring their own lunch and snack for the day. Our studios include a kitchenette with a refrigerator, microwave, and toaster which learners are welcome to use. During our harvest season, farm style meals will be offered periodically and include produce from the campus garden.
Afternoon Session (12:00 – 3:00)
After lunch and free time, the elementary children gather again for a Socratic discussion to reflect on and prepare for their afternoon work on civilization or quests. Much of the afternoon is dedicated to quests, which are game-based learning modules designed to help learners delve more deeply into important subject matter. Quests are self-directed and Eagles are encouraged to collaborate with peers as needed. This is the icing on the cake for our learners and an opportunity to discover individual passions and strengths. Days end with studio maintenance and a closing group discussion.
Note: PE, Art, Music are offered on Tuesday and Thursdays with some rotation throughout the year
